Well...what I wanted from this blog and what actually happened are two different things.
I wanted to blog about my missions opportunities...the process...the struggles...the victories...the actual trips...how I was changed.
But it never happened! I looked back and the last entry on this blog was about NYC - BEFORE I went.
And now, I've been to NYC twice on mission, once to Armenia on mission, and am preparing for trip #2 to Armenia.
I have only one excuse - life. Life has remained busy. This summer is crazy. So much to do...and I'm feeling the time crunch. We are half way through July. In less than 2 weeks, Dylan & I will be heading out of the country...and 2 weeks after we return, he will be headed back to school. For his 3rd year of college.
I swear I just blinked...and it all happened.
So...here we are.
My trip to NYC last May was amazing. I fell in love with the city. In love with the ministry of Graffiti. As much as I am not a city person, the energy in NYC is something I've never found anywhere else. I can't even explain it. We went to NYC again this past May...and it was still the same. Full of energy, full of people, full of busy-ness. And I loved it all. This time, we took a couple of guys with us...one of them Dylan. He had been to the city before but was not able to spend as much time as we did on this trip. He loved it too.
And Armenia in September of 2015? Equally amazing! I'm not a fan of international travel...the travel itself, that is. 12 hours on a plane is hard - especially coming West. The jet lag when I returned...a BEAR. Two months I spent trying to get back in a regular sleep pattern. But at the end of the day, when someone asked when I was going again...the answer was always "as soon as possible".
So...here we are.
T-minus 11 days. It just doesn't even seem real. Dylan & I are going with a different team than I traveled with before. We will be doing different things and in different areas. We will be doing Vacation Bible School in different areas throughout Armenia. I'm looking forward to seeing some parts of this beautiful country that I didn't see before. I'm excited to see familiar faces that I left behind almost a year ago. I'm anticipating meals lovingly prepared for our team. In other words, I cannot wait to be back in Armenia.
Three different times on Sunday alone I was asked about how the events transpiring in the Middle East were affecting our trip. Each time I had to explain that I have to compartmentalize...almost ignore these events. Because, yes, they are scary...and there is a call to safety. But, I know that God has called us to go...and go we must. There is great peace in knowing that the One who physically holds this world in place is holding me...and cares for me...and is protecting me...and will use me in whatever way HE chooses.
Surrender is hard...but so worth it. And almost always, it's easier to submit than to fight. That's what I've learned over the past couple of years. The struggle is not worth it; laying it all down before Him is.
So...here we go...into the Land of Noah. To serve. To love. To surrender. To Go.

One Year Gone...Another Beginning
Here we are on the eve of a new year...and, as many others are certainly doing, I've been reflecting on 2014.
It was a BIG year...a crazy BIG year.
Probably the biggest year for me since 1996.
In January, I wrote a post on a word that God had given me for 2014 - TRUST. And let me say, this has been an interesting journey.
At the beginning of 2014, I had plans. Plans for the year. Things already in the books. Dylan's graduation, follow up trip, leaving for college, etc.
But I could not have even FATHOMED what 2014 was actually going to bring.
Nor how much I would be leaning on that word TRUST.
When my heart was breaking because I just knew that Dylan would move far, far away from me for school...I whispered "trust".
When I looked at my bank account and wasn't quite sure how we were going to make it to the next week..."trust".
When I was lying in bed mulling over every little thing in my life at 3am..."trust".
And just like that...God came through every time.
The school thing, I admit, was the hardest for me. How in the world could I imagine the person I had wrapped my entire life around for 18 years living 9 hours from me? I remember grieving over this thought before the decision had even been made.
And finally, one day, I just had to give it up. I had to trust. I had to say "God if you want him in Florida, then I have to know that You are going to make this OK for me."
Although, I have to say...I'm extremely thankful that God & I were on the same page about keeping him in North Carolina. ;)
Ultimately on the school thing...I just prayed that God would make it crystal clear where He wanted Dylan.
Boy, did He.
I don't think I'll ever forget the day that the envelope came from Wake Forest...I didn't even open it...I gave it to Dylan to open it. He just looked at it...didn't say a word...and handed it to me.
Oh, by the way, he had already committed to High Point University. We'd paid the deposit.
I looked...and couldn't believe what I was seeing.
Basically after it was all said & done, his college would be paid for. With very little loan money. All grants. All scholarships. I basically couldn't afford to NOT send him to Wake.
It took a little more time for everything to process for Dylan. For me, the final decision was made. For Dylan, he wanted to consider. But a day later, he said "get the deposit back from HPU" and...here we are.
Dylan has completed his first semester at Wake. He has made friends. He has adjusted somewhat (I think there's more of that to come). He did well in his first semester. And in about 13 days from now, he'll start with his second semester.
Sometimes trust is easy...but often times it's hard. It's hard to trust that everything is going to turn out OK when we can't see the end. This year, I've definitely learned a lot. And my God has never been proven un-trustworthy. Which I kind of knew...but needed to be reminded.
I don't know what my word for 2015 is going to be yet. I have a few rolling around in my head, but I'm waiting to see what word God gives me.
But I do know that I can't wait to see what it is...and what He has in store for me this year.
Happy New Year!

Eighteen
Tomorrow my "baby" turns 18. I just cannot believe it. I promise, just the other day he was 3...I blinked and here we are.
In the wee small hours of the morning (I woke up at 3am this morning - caffeine often has a strange effect on me...instead of keeping me up for hours, I go to sleep thinking that the caffeine hasn't affected me at all...and then BAM, I wake up at 3am and I'm up until it's time to get up)...
Anyway, in the wee small hours of the morning, I decided to blog about my boy being 18. My first thoughts were toward a sweet, sappy, reflective writing thinking back to 18 years ago and having no clue what I was in for...but getting the best blessing ever. And then, as I got closer to morning, I decided to do something that maybe had a little more humor...and possibly still subjected to the sweet, sappy reflections...
This bi-polar approach can be blamed on Kate Conner...this is what I was reading at 3am...and 4am...her blog is not bi-polar per se...but it contains the truths I need to hear infused with the humor of living life with three kids. If you don't read her blog, you should.
Again...I digress...
So, without further adieu...here are 10 things I've learned by being Dylan's mom:
#1 - One of Dylan's preschool teachers gave me the BEST parenting advice ever...she said "If it's not immoral, illegal, or a potential danger to the child or others, don't sweat it". I can honestly say, I took that to heart. Hear me say, there is a time & place for discipline and self-control...but there are battles that we don't need to wage with our children. Wearing matching clothes...while embarrassing to you at the moment...is not that big of a deal. And just think, one day you can pull that picture out showing off their most hideous outfit choice, and the embarrassment will be theirs!
I did put my foot down on wearing socks with tennis shoes...there is no place for feet in tennis shoes without socks. That's just gross.
#2 - "I don't have time to go to the emergency room" is a valid reason "why not" for whatever hair-brained, daredevil trick that your child wants to try. This should be your immediate reaction to "Hey, Mom! Watch this!"
#3 - If you have dirt, sand, or mulch within a 10 foot range of your child, you are going to have it in their pants, socks, shoes...and transferred to your house. No lie...one day I think I dumped an entire sandbox out of Dylan's pants. How the child had been walking around with all that sand is beyond me.
#4 - There is a reason that boys don't use hair dryers. I have the singed towel to prove it. When asked why in the world he stuck the hair dryer right up on the towel, the answer was "I wanted to see what would happen".
#5 - "I wanted to see what would happen" is the cause of 95% of childhood accidents.
#6 - Having several seasons worth of good, wholesome TV shows on DVD will come in handy if you have the misfortune of ending up in the hospital on a crazy sleep schedule. Before they days of 24-hours of Nick Jr. and Netflix, "The Cosby Show" on DVD was a lifesaver the one time that Dylan had to be hospitalized. It's also what caused him to be a "Cosby Show" addict.
#7 - Showing up to church, dragging along a child with no shirt, is perfectly acceptable if the child will not wear the shirt you have picked out for him. Of course, this was before I learned the lesson from #1.
#8 - If you thought that you had loved something as much as you could ever love something, then you are wrong. I don't think I ever understood how much love I contained until I had Dylan. And when I thought I loved him as much as I ever could, I was wrong. It just grows and grows and grows.
#9 - You kind of have to get used to your kid. I loved him right off the bat...no doubt about it. But liking him? That took a bit. There's nothing that tests likability better than having that little person completely dependent on you...waking you up every 2 hours (if you are lucky)...being more tired than you've ever been before...and have that little one screaming for no apparent reason.
#10 - Teach your children to be responsible people - responsible for their actions, responsible for their words, responsible for themselves in appearance and attitudes. Help them to own their faults and their shortcomings...and help them to put forth their strengths.
There is so much more that I have learned being Dylan's mom. This past year, especially, we've been learning together - Dylan learning what it means to be a more mature person; me learning to let go a little at a time. This parenting thing isn't for sissy's...it isn't for the faint of heart...and it certainly does take a strength that at times you don't think you have. BUT every smile, every laugh, every positive thing they do are worth all the hard days, all the rough nights, all the sick days.
Happy 18th to a kid that I'm most proud of. God is going to do wonderfully, crazy, big things with this kid.

Next Steps
I am not a crier by nature...although I've found myself to be "weepier" over the past few years of my life. My BFF calls me a closet crier...she says she knows I cry...I just don't do it as openly and often as she does. ;)
Every morning I receive a devotional from Proverbs 31 Ministries...they are quick reads and almost always very timely. The one I received this morning was no exception. The title..."Where Your Tears Go". The lady writing spoke of how she was a crier...and she wrote about crying as she dropped her daughter off at college.
I'll admit...I teared up.
Monday begins Dylan's last chapter in school. Senior year is here. It's been a struggle trying to wrap my mind around this. How can it be that he has reached this year? It's not been long enough...he's not old enough...it's not time yet.
Yet...the calendar does not lie. Dylan has finished the prerequisite 12 years of schooling leading up to the Senior year...he's done well even. He is seventeen years old...and it is indeed time for him to begin Senior year.
And...it's killing me.
I'm so excited for him...so proud of him. He's done so well...I would say he's worked hard, but really...he's one of those kids who doesn't work hard, but still gets good grades (it's sickening). I even had one of his teachers tell me that towards the end of last year - she mentioned hoping she would be able to challenge him in his next AP class with her...she seemed dubious about the prospect...
But, there is a part of me that is just not ready to let go. I've spent a lot of time this summer by myself. Dylan was in Florida for two weeks...spent another week at the beach fishing...and between all of his summer "activities"...he has spent very little time at home. And while I don't really mind him being gone...I don't worry that he's up to no good...there is a part of me that has already fast forwarded to August of 2014 and is not ready for the prospect of many weeks on my own. I know there are some who have perfected this and enjoy the "on your own" life...but my whole world has been wrapped around this kid for the past 17 years...
So, I'm feeling a bit lost these days.
I know I should take each moment...live day to day...and I'm working really hard to do that...
But my mind can't help but look to the future and see the long stretch ahead of me.
Of course, I have no idea what God has planned for this next year...and I'm just clinging to the promise and the hope that He has a great plan for me.
Right now, though, I'm just trying to work through the next steps...

When Boredom Strikes
Or "stricks" as I began to type into the post title...
Just a little randomness today...
My work is staying caught up here lately...which means that I don't have as much to do...which means that I get bored and if I were OK with burning through my vacation time, I would just leave...but I'm not. Plus, I currently have no money...so my time off would consist of my sitting on my couch, watching my big TV and doing nothing...
I'm trying to find the problem here...
My last post (Falling Apart) referenced some goings-on that left me...well falling apart. All is well & resolved I'm happy to say.
Also, in good news...Baby Oliver is home from the hospital! YAY! He is still using a feeding tube to supplement his feeds & for his medications...but he is home after being in the hospital for almost 2 months. His second surgery was exactly what was needed to make him better and get things moving in a positive direction. Yay God! :)
Currently, I'm reading a book by Mary Jane Clark (see my Goodreads widget over here -------->. I am becoming a big fan of hers! I love the way she writes a mystery, giving the perspective of many different people, some of which you think might be the killer...even giving the perspective of the killer while keeping his/her anonymity until the very end. This is the third book I've read of hers and the first two I honestly didn't know how "dunit" until the last chapter. This book is proving to be the same. They are light reads - not quite as suspenseful as some murder mysteries, but a good read.
I recently finished The Book Thief. Oh.my.word. Such a good book. It's about a girl growing up in Nazi Germany. It's very sad...but really, what should you expect from that time period? Nazi Germany was a sad time period.
Dylan is taking the SAT's in a couple of weeks...oh my...we are on the eve of Senior year. I honestly can't believe it. One year from now, we will be looking towards Graduation. It's just surreal. I don't feel like I'm old enough to have a high school senior. It's just not possible. College plans are still up in the air...he says Florida State or Central Florida University...I say High Point University. I want to keep him close to me...but we shall see where God lands him. :)
The boy has expensive taste though...not an in-state or "public" school among his selections. All I have to say is that he better be getting some scholarships!
I'm becoming increasingly disappointed in Hawaii 5-0. This, at one time, was one of my favorite shows. Dylan & I have watched it faithfully. My two big issues with this show...#1 - they don't play new episdodes in any regular fashion. There is at least one to two weeks between new episodes. I could understand this during the holiday / award show season...but we are past all that. It's time to get some momentum to the show! Which brings me to #2 - last week's new episode, while it was good, didn't really have anything to do with the story line. They revisited a story line from the beginning of the season...but this one didn't really have anything to do with what's been going on. It's time to beef things up CBS!!!
I have to go to the doctor tomorrow...for a regular check up. I am already dreading it. I was so excited to find a doctor's office that would go ahead and schedule an appointment a year in advance. On the positive, at least this means that I'm going and keeping things in check. On the negative, I hate going to the doctor and usually don't go until I'm on my deathbed. So...tomorrow should be fun.
Not.
OK - enough of my rambling...time for me to get back to work. :)
Happy Tuesday!

{ Leo }
When Dylan was younger, he wanted nothing more than for us to have a dog. He would ask...I would turn him down. Finally, when he was about 7, my dad read an ad in the paper a lady had posted. She had three basset hounds that were free to good homes. By the time we got to go look at them, she had one left...and when we left she had none. Rosie came home with us that day and was such a sweet, sweet dog. She ended up going blind...which meant that when we moved out of Mom & Dad's house, she couldn't go with us. Plus, we don't have a fenced yard...and she loved to be outside most of the day.
A few years ago, Mom & Dad noticed that Rosie was having trouble getting up & down the stairs going into the back door from the yard. Dad took her to the vet, only to find out that she was suffering from nerve damage in her hindquarters...and the vet could give her meds for the pain, but she would most likely go downhill very quickly and she would be in a great deal of pain. We made the heartbreaking decision to have Rosie put to sleep.
About a month later, someone messaged me on Facebook about another 2 basset hounds that were available for free...and so Mom & Dad have ended up with Cookie...another sweet, if not a little too people dependent, basset hound. She really is perfect for them...she's playful, loves the kiddos and has a sweet disposition.
After we moved out, Dylan begged me to get him a dog for our house. I told him "no" over and over again. This past summer, Dylan turned 16. I could've gotten him any number of things for his 16th birthday, but I wanted this to be a special gift...and so I decided this was the year Dylan would get a dog.
I began my search through Craigslist - Dylan had wanted a beagle for a long time. I found a few possibilities...but some were older dogs and some were rescues. I didn't want a dog for a few years that we would have to put to sleep or would pass on due to age...and, while I have the utmost respect for people who take in rescue dogs, I knew that I couldn't do that. I needed a dog that was not too old, I preferred one not too young, that would be playful and would play well with little ones. On July 3rd (two days after Dylan's birthday), I saw an ad on Craigslist for a lemon beagle. I almost didn't click on it because there was no picture, but I was starting to get impatient to find a dog. The lady e-mailed me back very quickly and included a pic of a sweet brown & white dog. I arranged to meet her the next morning...and enter into our lives Leo.
Leo was just over a year old when we got him and he couldn't be a more perfect dog for us. He's playful...but can be low key. Even though he's not too old, he still has some of the puppy...but he likes his sleep too. He's a snuggly dog. He sleeps with Dylan almost every night...and when Dylan's not there, he sleeps with me. He loves Aly & Ayden and they love him back. He's such a sweet heart. And as you can see...he & Dylan are good friends!
So, we are now a dog family...and I couldn't be happier with our friend. :)

Just a moment...
I just tucked in my almost 16 year old son. We were watching TV & he just conked out on the couch. As I was pulling a blanket up over his shoulders, I went back in time...and all of the sudden he wasn't almost 16...he was almost 6...and I was sneaking back in his room after he was asleep to check on him. Or for one brief moment I was standing by his crib...watching his even breathing and marveling at the thought that this was my kid. As crazy as it is most days to think that I have an almost 16 year old kid...I am often more amazed & humbled that God chose me to be his Mom.
Tonight I was given a rare gift...to watch my son sleep for just a moment. Thank you Lord for blessing me with this child & with this simple moment.

2012 Goals
So...I know it's been a while since I've posted...and it's certainly WAY past over due for me to be setting my 2012 Goals...but here it is anyway.
Last year I attempted to set "Eleven in '11" which was supposed to be eleven things that I was going to do in 2011. Sadly, I think I might have accomplished about three things on that list. And really and truly, that is SO sad. Because they weren't hard things AT ALL!
I hate making "resolutions" - for the same reason no one else likes to make them - we all FAIL miserably at keeping them. So, instead, I've decided to make some goals. I've been rolling these around in my head since January and on Tuesday I finally got around to putting pen to paper so I could keep track of what I was setting out to do.
And when setting these goals, I wanted to set things that were reasonable...within reach...nothing too complicated. Most of these things are just one step to something bigger...and I think these are all great places to start.
So without further adieu...my 2012 Goals (as posted on my dresser mirror)! :)
I'm really excited about this list. And yes...I do think it's funny that "replacing blinds" made my 2012 goals list...but I've been meaning to do this since I moved in...and it's just not happened yet. There are a few other things that I'd like to do (buy new living room furniture, fix the drainage issue in my side yard, buy a Kindle fire) but I truly believe that by accomplishing these things first, I'll eventually be able to do the other things that I'd like to do. And if I do everything in 2012, what will I have to do in 2013??? ;)
In other news, the great college onslaught has begun for my high school kid. He took the PSAT in the beginning of the school year, plus he is now Microsoft certified in Excel & Access (whatever that means)...so the college info has started pouring in. This makes me both excited and sad...excited because out of the colleges that have contacted him, Wake Forest is on the list (to me this is HUGE because Wake is hard to get in to...but it would also mean MAJOR scholarships since 4 years of tuition would probably equal the cost of my house) and I'm excited to see so many colleges reaching out to him. Sad because we are getting closer to the day that he will leave me behind...
And to correct another issue that has been a thorn in my mother's side...I put a special "call out" for my Dad on his birthday in November...but didn't for my mother in December. Why you may ask? Because I only blogged ONCE in the month of December...and it was a full 15 days after her birthday. But, she will not let it rest...so I want to officially wish my mother a belated Happy Birthday via my blog...it's only 2 months & 8 days late. I guess the birthday dinner & gift were not enough for her! ;)
This is one of my favorite pictures of my parents...taken last June...
Seriously, I do love my momma! And I know she had a happy birthday in December! :)
Hope you all are doing well...maybe I'll get back into the blogging habit...we shall see!

I'm Still Here!!!! :)
No…you aren't seeing things. No one hacked my blog…
It really is me updating this thing!
So, it's been 2 months & 2 days since my last post…but I'm like Heinz Ketchup and Cheese…worth the wait and I get better with time.
Fall decided to set in for good yesterday. Again…the yoyo weather of NC is just fabulous. It was in the 80's on Monday & Tuesday…today's high is 60. But the sun is out…the skies are blue…the leaves are turning. It really is a great time to be in NC! I have yet to turn my heat on…my original goal was to leave it off until October 1st…now I'm trying to make it to November 1st…but the next few days are going to be chilly…so I may be a little short on my goal!

Ok - so that was cheese-y…no pun intended!
So…what has kept me occupied for the past 2 months and 2 days? The same old, same old. School started on August 25th…and soccer continues…and in the month of September, Dylan was doing driver's ed. Driver's ed. I cannot wrap my mind around the thought that I have a child old enough to drive. But the driver's ed class was a great source of stress…since I had to have Dylan at school at 6:45…in the morning. And no matter how tired I was, I could NOT adjust my "going to bed time" earlier to compensate for the early mornings. My body rebelled…and for three weeks I was exhausted.
The first week of October was the Dixie Classic Fair. This is one of my most favorite times of the year. I was only able to go twice this year…the first Friday with my BFF, her hubby & Dylan…and the first Saturday with my family. As always, it was fun and fall made a guest appearance for the fair…making it so much better. The Fair is not the Fair unless it's a little bit chilly! :)Last weekend, our family was supposed to go camping in Fancy Gap, VA; however, my mom & dad have been battling camper issues and the camper finally won. We improvised our camping at Mom & Dad's with a campfire in their fire pit…we roasted hot dogs and made s'mores.
My sister & her family went ahead and camped for the weekend and we drove up on Saturday to visit and play a bit. We went to Galax for lunch…walked around the town…hit some of the stores. We found a bathtub full of Hot Wheels - Ayden was in HEAVEN! :)
On our way back to the campground, we stopped at one of the overlooks off the Blue Ridge Parkway…
And then we went to an Alpaca farm!
I played with the kiddos on the playground at the campground...
And then we ate dinner…had more s'mores and headed home. What a great day!
And this sweet little boy turned TWO yesterday! We are celebrating big time this weekend! :)
Work has been crazy…we are down to one "office girl"…which would be ME. It's been nice because I've kept pretty busy. I'd prefer to be busy than to sit here and twiddle my thumbs! But during my lunch breaks, when I used to blog, I've needed more of a "veg" time than a time when I had to think about writing and such! I would love to get back into this so I'm not posting monthly (or bi-monthly) updates…but we shall see. I miss reading your lovely posts and seeing what you are up to! Any old time you are wondering about me, please feel free to drop me a line at brwnidgrljenn@gmail.com. I'm trying to re-enter the Twitter world too…so if you are on Twitter, you can find me - @brwnidgrljenn.
Hope you are all well! Hope to see you again soon!

Fifteen years later...
This sweet baby boy...
has kept me very busy for the past 15 years.
He walked at 9 1/2 months...
And ran at 9 3/4 months! :)
Today...he still keeps me busy...still runs...a lot...and I couldn't be prouder to be his mom!
Happy 15th Birthday, Dylan!

Gratituesday! :)
I'm really trying to get back into this blogging thing...
VBS is over...
But work was C-R-A-Z-Y yesterday.
And I thought about writing last night, but then I just sat on my couch and played Sudoku & Scrabble on my phone.
I'm such a slacker!
Anyway, I'm hoping a little Gratituesday will help me get back in the swing of things...so, here goes! Ten things I'm grateful for today...
#1 - Vacation Bible School is OVER! I love the concept of VBS...I don't mind participating in it...but this year, I just didn't feel like I had the time to put into it...and I hate not being able to put my best foot forward. Plus it was such a long week. But now it's over until next year...
Except that really it's not...because we get to do this all over again at the end of July when we go to Florida on our mission trip.
BUT, I won't have to teach it...I'm just there for crowd control! :)
#2 - Right at this moment, I'm loving this Jumping Jelly Bean scent I have in my Scentsy warmer at work. YUM!
#3 - Last week, I took my car in to the shop because it keeps throwing these strange warning lights. Sometimes they come on...sometimes they don't. Bad news is, the part that *might* need to be fixed is $1600.00 - just for the part. Good news is, the mechanic says it's not a necessary fix right now since we don't know for sure that it's even bad!
Best news - he didn't charge me a DIME for checking it out.
#4 - I teach in our Children's Worship at church...my helper has had to go be with her parents for the month of July...which leaves me without a helper. I have some subs lined up - hopefully. I've been stressing about this...and then on Friday night I was talking to my friend Deanna (who is on the other Children's Worship team) and found out that she's been going to school to get her CNA license. I had no idea (she wasn't telling a lot of people for some reason) and since then I've just been so grateful for her dedication to this ministry. She very easily could've said that she has a lot going on and she might need to take some time, but she didn't. And I would've understood that, because she also is a hair dresser...is married...and has two step-sons that she & her husband have joint custody of with their mom & step-dad. But she didn't. And she probably doesn't even realize how grateful I am for all of this.
But I'm gonna let her know! :)
#5 - I think my flower beds are pretty much finished. I couldn't be happier with the way they've turned out and the way they look. I am so proud of the way my house looks on the outside now!
#6 - This weekend is the annual God & Country celebration in a town close by. I usually go with my BFF & her hubby. A couple of years ago, we didn't really have much going on and after the parade we drove around a bit and ended up in Mt. Airy. We had so much fun...just walking around...laughing...just having a day out of town. We've decided to do that again this year...but this year, we are heading for Boone after the parade. I'm ecstatic! Boone is kind of my other home and I haven't been in over a year. I need to just spend a day soaking up the mountain air & sunshine.
Plus I got a gift card to the Mast General Store...I hear the candy store calling my name! ;)
#7 - This is Dylan's birthday week! He will be FIFTEEN on Friday. FIFTEEN! When in the world did that happen? I'm so thankful for a relatively good child. He has his moments, as most kids do, but the issues we deal with are so minimal compared to what it could be.
#8 - We finally got some much needed rain last night! I've been water my plants...and they've been doing ok. We had some storms roll through around 9ish last night...nothing too severe in my neck of the woods...but I know we got a good dousing. Of course, with our mid-90's today, most of that is probably dried up by now!
#9 - Last week during VBS, my cousin's little girl was in my class. We were talking about sacrifice and I asked the kids ways that they could show God's love by sacrificing something of theirs. Destiny raised her hand and told me that she had been selling some of her artwork to her family and donating the money to her church for charity. It was probably the sweetest thing...and when I told her Mom about it, her Mom said that she never even asked to keep any of it...she gave it willingly and freely. I'm so thankful to see young children with such giving hearts.
#10 - Next Monday is the 4th of July. I'm thankful for an extra day off this weekend...but more importantly, I'm thankful for the independence that we have in this country. I'm thankful for the men and women who made that independence a reality...and who KEEP our country free. Regardless of how you feel about the economy, our president, wars, etc., you should ALWAYS be thankful for the people who put their lives on the line to keep our country safe - including our local police, firemen & emergency services people.
Hope you have a great Tuesday! :)

Pour Your Heart Out: My Kid
I don't think I make it any secret around here that I love my kid. He's by far the best thing that ever happened to me so far in my life. I alluded a little bit to something yesterday that he did that just really put me over the moon concerning my C25K runs...I'll re-share that in a bit.
I knew that Dylan was strong when he was born. Within a couple of weeks, he would push himself up to stand on his feet whenever you held him in your lap. He wasn't strong enough to hold himself up, of course, but he would push on you with his feet and he loved to be held so that he could stand on your stomach, legs, whatever. He was sitting up, well, by the time he was 5 months old or so. I can't honestly remember when he began to crawl because that stage lasted all of about 5 minutes (or so it seemed) and at 9 1/2 months I had a walker. Sometimes I have to think about that fact...because it seems so unreal, even though I know kids develop at different paces and some hit those milestones before others. And I've often wondered if I over-exxagerate the time...trying to make it seem like he was more advanced. But then, I remember that I took him to Florida for the first time when he was 10 mos old and we have video of him toddling around Disney World.
Of course, the walking also only lasted a few minutes before he began to run...everywhere and all the time! I have a distinct memory of Dylan on his first birthday...he was running through the backyard towards his sandbox...giggling and smiling all the way. Precious. Simply Precious.
I also remember that my Mom & Dad took him for his 1 yr check up (I had a class I couldn't miss...so they took him for me)...the doctor was checking out all his joints...he got a kind of strange look on his face when he was checking out his hips and upper thighs and Dad thought there was something wrong. Finally the doctor's face relaxed and he said that there was nothing wrong...his legs were just very muscular for his age!
As Dylan has grown, I've discovered that he's very athletically gifted. He can play most sports well. And although, he can play them well, he enjoys most sports as a casual player. At one point during Elementary school, the school had begun a basketball program. Of course, Dylan didn't sign up because he'd prefer to just "shoot hoops" rather than play an organized game...but later in the week, the principal called him to his office and BEGGED Dylan to play on the team. He knew Dylan could play and his grades were good, so he met the academic requirements. But, Dylan politely declined.
I've always noticed in whatever sport or athletic endeavor that Dylan participates in he has great endurance. And while the only sport that he plays in any organized fashion is soccer, he can be very competitive. He's a bit of a perfectionist, although you wouldn't know it by looking at his room. But there are things that he chooses to be best at. Math is one of those things...when they do timed exercises he has to be the first one done. I've tried to encourage the "going back over your work" thing...but aggravatingly enough, most of the time all of his answers are correct too. In gym they have athletic testing too. And he's competitive with this too. He wants to do the most push ups or sit ups or run his mile the fastest. (Funny sidenote: the only athletic test that he can't seem to do well at is jump roping - I think this is hilarious and he always says that he doesn't think that it should be included...I just laugh)
So, you know I've been working through the Couch to 5K program. And Dylan is a runner. On Saturday morning, we went to do our run. Dylan's comment prior to the run (when discussing his upcoming 5K) - I'm not even sure I'll be able to run the whole 5K. I told him he needed to try to run 3 miles at the park and see how he did.
Yeah...he knocked it out...in about 24 minutes...while I pushed myself through 8 torturous intervals of running/walking.
Last night, I did my first run of my second week. I'm re-doing Week One because I feel like I'm not ready to move to the Week Two. My sister & her family had come to the park to walk/run as well and at the end of my 7th interval, I caught up with her walking. So, when I started my 8th interval, she & Dylan started running too. And I found myself running better...keeping a better pace...not hurting quite as much as normal. Now I understand that I'm conditioning myself and that I should be getting better with each run. But, my 8th interval felt like my 1st.
And right then & there, I knew that I needed a running partner. I mentioned this to Dylan on the way home and he said, yeah...how do you think I ran my mile in 6:24 at school?
And then, I asked a question that I thought I would be politely declined on...I asked Dylan to run my intervals with me on Thursday.
And he said yes.
My 14 year old did not politely decline my request.
Honestly, I figured he wouldn't want to run the intervals...that he'd want to go at his own pace. But, he said he would run with me!
Usually, my posts for this meme are where I pour my heart out in sadness or loneliness or aggravation...but today, I'm pouring my heart out in joy.
Joy that I have this great kid in my life. And for the support he's giving me in my quest to be in better physical shape.
Now...later today, he might not make me as joyful...but I'll take it for now! :)

Friday
How 'bout a little Friendly Friday Follow...

And a little Friday Follow...

I haven't been participating in the Friday Follow here lately becauseI'm slow and couldn't figure out the deal with the spots I've been really busy with vacation and stuff and haven't had time to read a lot of extra blogs! But, here we are at a Holiday weekend and I thought, hey...maybe I'll try again! :)
And what about a Feel Good Friday???

Last Friday, when I was blogging beachside, I didn't think I'd be feeling too good by this Friday. Usually it's a long week after a week long vacation, but this really has been a good week! Probably helped that Dylan's birthday was right smack in the middle of the week...although being away for a week meant that I had to do all of my birthday shopping quickly...because you will quickly find out that I am not a good planner-ahead-er. I procrastinate horribly...which caused a great deal of stress for my parents when I was going through school...and many late nights working on projects that were due the next day. Unfortunately, I think I passed this on to my son...
Anyway, it has been a good week! We began the 14th birthday celebration on Wednesday night with the family...we ate at Fire Mountain (like Golden Corral, if you aren't familiar with Fire Mountain) which I personally think isway over priced for not that great food ok, but Dylan loves Fire Mountain. And it was his day...so, we ate there. Then headed back to my house for gifts and cookie cake. I baked and decorated myself...didn't turn out too bad, huh?
By the way...those are supposed to be fireworks...just in case you can't figure it out. Dylan really loves the fact that his bday is so close to the 4th and usually picks red/white/blue for his cookie! AND please don't be too impressed with my cookie cake making abilities...because that is a small package of Pillsbury cookie dough rolled out into one big cookie and decorated with store bought tubed icing. I can make cake and really good icing like my mom, but this is what he asks for...and it is his day!
Then we celebrated AGAIN on his real birthday, which was yesterday. He was asleep when I left for work...so I left these notes for him...

Then we celebrated AGAIN on his real birthday, which was yesterday. He was asleep when I left for work...so I left these notes for him...
I had stuck these in different places...the first on his night stand...the second on his door frame...the third on the TV and the fourth on the bathroom mirror! (I have to say that I think it's incredibly cool that he gathered them and put them together to keep...I figured they'd end up in the trash can!) Then I came home from work early...took him to GameStop so he could spend some of his gift cards...patiently waited for him to look around (well, I tried at least)...took him to Target for a pretzel, which are his fav, and then went to pick up his friend Seth for some Go-Karting! We went to a place in Pilot Mountain - Mayberry Shazaam - which was a REALLY good track. And they were the only ones there...so I think they had a great time!
After that we drove about 10 miles up the road to Mt. Airy (the town that fictional Mayberry from The Andy Griffith Show is based on) to go eat at Goobers 52! We love this restaurant...they actually put one in Winston-Salem, but I think Dad said it didn't last (wasn't in a good place to do well, I don't think). We had fried pickles...which if you've never had them...you MUST. The boys had wings, I had a burger and then we went back home! All in all, I think it was a good day for Dylan!
Now, we are starting on a holiday weekend...I love the 4th! Dylan has gone to the lake with Seth for a weekend of tent camping & fishing and I'm staying with my BFF tonight so we can get up extra early and hit the East Bend God & County Parade. This parade is absolutely the best. East Bend is about as "small town" as you can get...fire trucks/EMT/police/sheriff from all over the county will be displayed...not to mention about a thousand John Deere tractors! And they throw CANDY galore! We are taking her Godchildren - J&J - I'm just hoping they are in good spirits because it will be no fun if they aren't.
So...this has been a good week and today does "feel good". Happy 4th of July!!!
